About the IAPEN INDIA Dysphagia Core Group

Aim :

To reduce dysphagia-related morbidity in high-risk populations through integrated, accessible interventions, standardizing clinical practices, advancing research in aging, stroke, and head-neck cancers, and fostering collaboration among multidisciplinary professionals to improve the care and quality of life for individuals with swallowing difficulties.

Vision :

To ensure Nutrition Security for all individuals with difficulty in chewing and swallowing, providing access to safe, nutritious food that can be consumed bio-synchronously to meets their dietary needs and food preferences for a healthy life. We aim to create a Dysphagia-Free India where timely, evidence-based care prevents complications and improves quality of life. Through multidisciplinary strategies, we will prevent, detect early, and effectively manage dysphagia, ensuring safe swallowing, optimal nutrition, and enhanced well-being for all. 

Mission :

Our mission is to promote nutrition security for individuals with difficulty in chewing and swallowing, due to structural, neurological, and cognitive conditions, through research, development, training, and community empowerment. We aim to prevent malnutrition by advancing interdisciplinary research in Dietetics, Economics, Food Technology, Medicine, Nutrition, Occupational Therapy, Speech Language Pathology, and Surgery (arranged alphabetically).

Our key goals are:

  1. Sharing Knowledge Across Disciplines: Bridging gaps between normal and disordered swallowing in relation to nutrition.

2.  Providing a Multidisciplinary Forum: Facilitating knowledge sharing, knowledge production, and affordable, accessible, and cost-effective solutions for individuals across all income groups—low, middle, and high.

3. Enhancing Interdisciplinary Communication: Developing protocols for dysphagia care in alignment with the International Classification of Health Interventions (ICHI-WHO).

4. Advocacy for Nutrition Security: Ensuring nutrition security for babies (3-6 years), children in schools, individuals with legally disabling conditions, and temporarily disadvantaged groups.

We strive to unite nutrition experts and multidisciplinary professionals nationwide to advance dysphagia care through:

  1. Developing Evidence-Based Guidelines: Creating nutritional guidelines and protocols for swallowing rehabilitation.

2.  Promoting Awareness and Training: Educating healthcare providers and communities to prevent and manage dysphagia-related malnutrition.

3.  Fostering Research and Policy Advocacy: Ensuring equitable access to innovative nutritional therapies across diverse settings in India.

We aim to lead national efforts in dysphagia awareness, research, and training by:

  1. Standardizing Protocols: Developing protocols for screening, assessment, and management of dysphagia.

2. Building Capacity: Offering multidisciplinary education and certification programs.

3. Advocating for Policy Integration: Integrating clinical nutrition and critical care policies.

Dr. Krishnakumar currently serves as Professor at the Department of Head and Surgery and Oncology at Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (Amrita Hospital). He did his MBBS at T. D. Medical College, Alappuzha and obtained MS (ENT) from B.J. Medical College Pune in January 2002. During May 2002 - August 2005, he worked as a consultant ENT surgeon at KVM Hospital, Cherthala. Later, he joined Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences to obtain his MCh (Head and Neck Surgical Oncology) and successfully completed the same in June 2008.
In July 2008, he joined Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Buffalo, New York for a two-year fellowship program in Head and Neck Surgical Oncology. During the first year of the fellowship program, Dr. Krishnakumar was actively involved in research projects on the development of newer photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy (PDT) for head and neck tumors.
During the second year, he was exposed to the entire clinical aspects covering ablative and reconstructive head and neck surgery with exposure to endoscopic skull base surgery. After completing the fellowship program, he joined Amrita Hospital in August 2010 as Associate Professor.Having over 17 years of clinical experience and 10 years of academic experience, he has presented and published papers in national and international forums. Won the Young Investigator Award, at the Indian Co-operative Oncology network.
He has more than 40 publications in international journals. He is the Regional Editor (Asia Pacific) of the Journal of Craniomaxillofacial Trauma and Reconstruction (AOCMF) and is a journal reviewer of more than 10 international journals including The Laryngoscope, Clinical Otolaryngology, Head and Neck. World swallowing week is observed Dec 12th-18th to raise awareness about Dysphagia- difficulty in swallowing. This hidden disability is seen in many disease conditions like post stroke, parkinsons, head and neck cancer and also in seniors and post Covid.

This video which is an initiative by Dysphagia Core Group-IAPEN India is to raise awareness about this swallowing difficulty among the public. 50 dietitians across the country have recorded this video in 16 Indian Languages so this important message reaches the masses.
The message is ” Screen for Dysphagia- PREVENT Malnutrition“.
